Toon Bijnens

Beekeeper

“Bees are magical.”

His experience

After finishing his Bachelor’s degree in Adult Education at the VUB, Toon followed a one-year course in Nature Management, organised by Inverde. Management and education clearly formed part of his areas of interest from early on. He went on to perfect his knowledge, following training courses in grafting, the creation of flower meadows, the inoculation of mushrooms. Next, Toon spent 4 years on the executive board of Hujo (Flemish young humanists) where he learned the ins and outs of budget and human management.

In 2019, he managed to add another string to his bow by completing a course in organic farming organised by the Centre National Agricol (National Agricultural Centre). And when he’s not stuck in his experimental garden, Toon manages a Facebook group (Ecotribe) to share ecological information. So many precious aspects to his job at BeeOdiversity!

His role

As beekeeper, Toon is in charge of the rearing and upkeep of the BeeOdiversity colonies and of organising events to raise awareness of honeybees.

What motivates him?

Toon wishes to have a real and lasting impact on the quality of the environment. And he wants to pursue his research into beekeeping and learn the intricacies of the trade. He loves being involved in a business that makes sense and creates links between science, apiculture and biodiversity.
