Discover The EU Nature Restoration Law

As part of the EU Biodiversity strategy, and to introduce more decisive action to achieve the biodiversity objectives for 2030 and 2050, the Commission has proposed the new EU Nature Restoration Law. It aims to restore ecosystems, habitats and species over the land and marine areas of the EU.

Why are these regulations so important?

  • Half of world’s GDP depends on nature, and +80% of habitats in the EU are in bad or poor conservation level
  • +75% of global food crops depend on pollinators, and 33% of bee and butterfly species in the EU are in decline
  • 40% of global soils is degraded, and 70% of EU soils are in unhealthy conditions
  • The global food system is responsible for 80% of deforestation, and it is the main cause of biodiversity loss

What are the benefits of restoring wetlands, rivers, forests, grasslands and marine ecosystems?

  • Increase biodiversity
  • Protect natural processes that clean our air and water, pollinate our crops and keep us safe from floods
  • Limit global warming to 1.5°C
  • Strengthen Europe’s strategic independence and resilience by preventing natural disasters and lowering risks to food security.

Objectives

  • Allow for the long-term and sustained recovery of biodiverse and resilient nature
  • Contribute to meet the EU goals of climate mitigation and climate adaptation
  • Fulfil international commitments

  • Contribute to meet the EU goals of climate mitigation and climate adaptation
  • Fulfil international commitments

What will The Nature Restoration do?

  • By 2030, restore at least 20% of EU land and sea, and by 2050, all ecosystems that require restoration
  • Require EU countries to submit National Restoration Plans to the Commission within two years of the Regulation taking effect
  • Bolster existing EU nature regulations including all natural habitats, and not only those protected by the Birds and Habitats Directives or Natura 2000
  • Set the standard for international action at the front of Biodiversity COP15 by showing EU leadership in preserving and restoring nature

The creation of these kind of laws is showing that there is a need for taking action. BeeOdiversity can help all types of companies to understand these regulations and to introduce measures in their business activities which contribute to the accomplishment of the objectives and targets included in the Nature Restoration Law.
