Depuis toujours, les êtres humains ont besoin de la nature pour vivre, alors que la nature n’a pas besoin d’eux pour exister. Les humains interagissent fortement avec leur environnement. Ils en dépendent pour avoir accès à la nourriture, à l’eau et à un habitat. Toutes nos sociétés se sont développées autour de ce que la nature nous offre. Mais les ressources ne sont pas illimitées et l’environnement se dégrade, menaçant ainsi notre patrimoine commun. Il est urgent de prendre conscience du rôle et des bienfaits que les hommes obtiennent des écosystèmes, pour en assurer leur protection et leur gestion par la suite.

Humans have always needed nature to live, whereas nature does not need humans to exist. Humans interact strongly with their environment. They depend on it for access to food, water and habitat. All our societies have developed around what nature provides. But resources are not unlimited and the environment is deteriorating, threatening our common heritage. It is urgent to become aware of the role and benefits that humans obtain from ecosystems, in order to ensure their protection and subsequent management.

As part of the EU Biodiversity strategy, and to introduce more decisive action to achieve the biodiversity objectives for 2030 and 2050, the Commission has proposed the new EU Nature Restoration Law. It aims to restore ecosystems, habitats and species over the land and marine areas of the EU.
